In the first three months of 2026, Vietnam exported approximately 2.2 million tons of rice. Despite a slight decrease in volume, the price of 5% broken rice remained stable at $360-365 per ton, higher than its main competitors.

According to the latest report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , Vietnam's rice exports in March 2026 are estimated at 0.9 million tons with a value of US$464 million. For the first quarter of 2026, the total export volume reached 2.2 million tons, equivalent to US$1.1 billion, a decrease of 4.4% in volume and 12.2% in value compared to the same period last year.

Trends in rice prices on the world market.

Data from Reuters shows that Vietnamese rice prices are trending more stable compared to other major exporting countries. Specifically, Vietnamese 5% broken rice is currently being offered at around $360-365 per ton, unchanged from the end of February 2026.

Conversely, Indian rice prices saw a slight decrease due to abundant supply and the depreciation of the Rupee. Meanwhile, Thai rice prices also adjusted downwards as traders cautiously assessed the situation in the Middle East.

Pressure from logistics costs and geopolitical conflicts.

Although conflicts in the Middle East have not directly impacted global rice supply and demand, experts warn of repercussions on transportation costs. Rising fuel and maritime insurance costs have significantly increased logistics fees to markets such as Africa, slowing down trade.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development forecasts that rice prices in the Mekong Delta region may decrease slightly in early Q2/2026 due to the peak harvest of the Winter-Spring crop. However, import demand for food reserves from international partners will be a supporting factor helping prices stabilize soon.

The domestic market maintained stable prices.

In the domestic market, retail rice prices in March 2026 did not experience significant fluctuations:

  •  In An Giang: Regular rice prices remain stable at 12,500 VND/kg; Jasmine fragrant rice maintains a price of 15,000 VND/kg.
  •  In Dong Thap: IR 50404 rice reached 13,800 VND/kg; IR 64 rice reached 14,500 VND/kg. Premium varieties such as Nang Thom and Jasmine maintained prices of 20,000 VND/kg and 18,000 VND/kg respectively.

Notably, the purchase price of finished raw rice has increased slightly by about 100 VND/kg. Specifically, 5% broken rice reached 14,200 VND/kg and 25% broken rice reached 13,200 VND/kg.

Boosting exports through free trade agreements.

In response to the new developments, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has issued Directive No. 08/CT-BCT, focusing on solutions to promote consumption and export. The management agency is studying the inclusion of rice in the roadmap for the ecosystem supporting businesses to take advantage of FTA agreements as early as 2026.

At the same time, Vietnam is stepping up negotiations with the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom to revise the list of fragrant rice eligible for tariff quotas under the EVFTA and UKVFTA agreements. This is expected to help Vietnamese rice increase its competitiveness and penetrate deeper into high-end markets with high added value.
